Accountant cover letter
Accounting letters should be plain. Name the area of the close or the return they need, then the area you have owned. This is not a letter about loving numbers.
How to open
State the setting, such as a monthly close or a tax season in a firm, and the schedules you prepared. If their posting is industry-specific, say whether you have closed books in that industry or only in another one.
Name the schedule
One schedule you owned is better than a list of every account in the chart. Pick the one closest to their posting.
Be exact about review
Say whether your work was reviewed by a manager or whether you were the reviewer. Those are different levels.
Deadline honesty
If you have worked a close calendar or a filing season, say so. Do not promise you never miss a deadline.
An example paragraph
This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.
You need someone who can own the revenue reconciliation each month. I prepared that schedule for a subscription business, including the bridge from billings to recognized revenue, and a manager reviewed it.
What to skip
Skip a paragraph about being detail-oriented. The schedule is the proof. Skip credentials you do not hold and software you have only seen.
Questions
- Should I mention a busy season?
- Yes if the job is seasonal or the posting asks about overtime around a close or a filing date. Keep it factual.
- Do I explain why I am leaving a firm?
- Not in the letter. The fit for their close is the subject.
