Civil engineer cover letter
Civil letters should name the facility and the side of the work, design or field. One set of sheets or one inspection duty is the proof. A general interest in infrastructure is not.
Resume tips for a civil engineer
How to open
Name transportation, water, site, or structures, and whether you designed or delivered. Mention the license status in a clause if the posting raises it.
A review comment
A revision after a city or a senior comment shows you have been through a real set. Describe the change, not a fight.
Agency or private
Public-client work and private land development differ. Use the closer example.
No stamp you cannot use
Do not offer to seal drawings if you are not licensed to seal them.
An example paragraph
This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.
You are hiring for site-development design. I prepared drainage sheets under a licensed reviewer and revised the inlet layout after a city comment.
What to skip
Skip a list of every design program, project costs you did not manage, and any implication that you sealed the set if you did not.
Questions
- Should I send plan sheets?
- Only redacted sheets you are allowed to share, and only when asked. Describe them in the letter regardless.
- What if I am switching from design to the field?
- Say that you are switching and what you have already seen on a site. Do not write the letter as a resident engineer.
