Financial analyst cover letter
Finance letters should be specific and short. Name the forecast, memo, or report in the posting and the closest one you have produced. Do not define finance.
Resume tips for a financial analyst
How to open
State the team: planning, credit, investment, or accounting-adjacent analysis. Name one artifact. If their industry is new to you, say the artifact that transfers and the industry that does not.
Show the source data
Mention where the numbers came from. A forecast from a billing extract is a different job from a model built only on public filings.
Who read it
Say who used the work. An executive review and a daily operating check are different audiences.
No invented precision
Do not quote a return or a variance you would not put in front of your old manager.
An example paragraph
This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.
You are hiring for a planning analyst who can own a revenue forecast. I built that monthly forecast from a billing extract and reviewed the gap to plan with our finance lead.
What to skip
Skip market commentary, a list of every Excel function, and any promise about their future results. Skip credentials you do not hold.
Questions
- Should I attach a model?
- Only if they asked and the file contains nothing confidential. Otherwise describe the artifact in a few sentences.
- What if I am coming from accounting?
- Say which schedules you owned and which forecasting you have and have not done. The letter is a good place to be exact.
