Graphic designer cover letter
Design letters should point at work. Name the kind of piece they need and one piece you finished that is actually similar. Complimenting their rebrand is not a sample.
Resume tips for a graphic designer
How to open
Say brand, product, packaging, or campaign in the first sentence. Name one project and your role in the file. Offer the portfolio for the rest.
The brief
One sentence on the constraint is enough: existing brand rules, a print size, a screen you had to match. That tells them you can work inside a system.
Collaboration
Say if a writer, a developer, or a printer was part of the handoff. Pretending you did their jobs weakens the example.
No fake client
Do not describe a school project as a client. Label personal work as personal if you include it.
An example paragraph
This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.
You need posters inside an existing brand, not a new identity. I designed a seasonal in-store series under a brand system and handed off print-ready files the vendor ran as delivered.
What to skip
Skip a critique of their current design, a list of every tool, and any piece you cannot show. Skip praise that does not connect to your work.
Questions
- What if my best work is under a non-disclosure agreement?
- Describe the kind of piece and the constraint without the confidential detail, and show other work you are free to share.
- Should I redesign their brand as a sample?
- Only if they asked for an exercise. An unsolicited redesign often misses constraints you do not know.
