Human resources manager cover letter

Human resources letters should name the workforce and one process. Culture language without a process is how these letters all start to sound the same.

Resume tips for a human resources manager

How to open

Say the setting in the posting: plant, clinic, store, or office. Name one process you have run for a similar group. Do not open with a passion for people.

A real loop or case type

A hiring loop or a category of employee-relations issues is enough. Leave out names and outcomes that are not yours to tell.

Match union and non-union honestly

If you have only worked in one of those settings, say so when their posting is the other. The policy work is not identical.

No legal advice in the letter

Do not tell them their policy is unlawful or promise a risk-free workplace. Describe the work you have done.

An example paragraph

This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.

You need a manager for a warehouse workforce. I partnered with a site lead on supervisor hiring and handled attendance cases through the written policy.

What to skip

Skip the words "strategic partner" unless you say the decision you were in. Skip any employee's story. Skip software you have not run.

Questions

Should I mention a sensitive investigation?
Mention the category only, such as attendance or a workplace complaint, and only if that is the work they are hiring. No names.
What if I am moving from recruiting to generalist work?
Say which processes you have run and which you have not. Do not imply you have done employee relations if you have only hired.
