Mechanical engineer cover letter
Engineering letters should name hardware. State the kind of product they build and the closest drawing, test, or analysis you have owned. Skip a general love of engineering.
Resume tips for a mechanical engineer
How to open
Name the domain and the artifact. If you have not worked in their exact product, say the transferable piece: a similar load, a similar manufacturing method, a similar test.
One revision
A change after a sample or a test is strong evidence. Describe what was wrong and what you changed, without a dramatic failure story that blames a teammate.
Manufacturing reality
If you have worked with a supplier or a shop, say so when the posting is about release, not only concept work.
No borrowed license
Do not sign the letter with credentials you do not hold, and do not imply you can stamp a drawing if you cannot.
An example paragraph
This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.
You are hiring for someone who can release brackets with a supplier. I owned those drawings on an industrial assembly and revised them after the first samples missed the fit we specified.
What to skip
Skip a list of every simulation product, a claim about a product's market success, and coursework presented as a shipped design.
Questions
- Should I include a portfolio of drawings?
- If you are allowed to share redacted drawings, offer them when asked. Do not attach a current employer's files.
- What if the posting wants a license I do not have?
- Say what you hold. If the license is required, the honest step may be to skip the application.
