Sales representative cover letter
Sales letters often shout energy and hide the motion. A useful letter says you have sold something comparable, to a comparable buyer, in a comparable way. If that is not true, the letter should not pretend.
Resume tips for a sales representative
How to open
Name their buyer and their offer in the first sentence, then your closest match. Say inbound or outbound. If they sell to a buyer you have never called, say what is adjacent instead of claiming the same book.
Show a full step
Mention one concrete step you owned: building the list, the first meeting, the proposal, or the renewal. A letter that says "crushed quota" and names no step is empty.
Match the sale length
A one-call sale and a long technical sale are different. Use the example that has their shape.
No fantasy pipeline
Do not promise a revenue total for their territory. You have not seen it.
An example paragraph
This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.
You want a representative who can open new clinic accounts rather than only take inbound calls. I sold a scheduling tool to independent clinics in one metro area, starting from a list I built.
What to skip
Skip hype about being a hunter or a closer, a list of personality traits, and any ranking you would not want a former manager to hear read aloud.
Questions
- Should I attach a quota spreadsheet?
- No, unless they asked. One honest sentence about the motion is more useful, and a spreadsheet often includes data that is not yours to share.
- What if I am changing industries?
- Say the motion that transfers and the buyer that does not. Do not rename your old product to sound like theirs.
