Software engineer cover letter

A software engineer cover letter is a short argument that your resume is about their system. When a posting asks for one, the reader wants to see that you read the description and can connect a real piece of your work to it.

Resume tips for a software engineer

How to open

Name the team or the product area in the first sentence, and the kind of work you want to do there. Then point to one project that faced a similar constraint: reliability, a legacy codebase, a regulated setting, or a product that was still being shaped. Do not open with how hard-working you are.

One project is enough

Pick the closest match and say what you did. If the posting is about an API, do not spend the letter on an unrelated class project unless that project is your only evidence.

Use their words only when they fit

If they say on call or code review, use those words only when you have done that work. Echoing the ad without the experience shows up in the first conversation.

Close on the practical fit

End with the role, the city or remote arrangement you can actually accept, and a pointer to the resume for the detail. Skip a slogan about being a great asset.

An example paragraph

This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.

The backend role on your billing team is the work I want. In my last product I owned the invoice service, including the retry path when a payment provider timed out, which is the closest match to the reliability work you describe.

What to skip

Skip a tour of every job since school, a list of soft skills, and any claim about how fast their team ships. The letter is not the place to add a technology the resume does not already support.

Questions

Do I need a letter when the form says it is optional?
Send one when you can say something the resume does not: why this team, or a constraint you have handled that the posting emphasizes. A copied letter is weaker than none.
How long should it be?
A few short paragraphs. If it repeats every bullet, cut it back to the closest project and the reason you are writing to this team.
