UX designer cover letter
UX letters should point at a workflow, not at your passion for users. Name the task in the posting and one handoff you have already made for a similar task.
How to open
State the product type and the task. Say what you looked at before drawing. Point to the case study if you can share it.
Input before pixels
One sentence on support notes, sessions, or a constraint from engineering is the part many letters skip.
What you did not control
If brand or engineering limited the solution, say so. Working inside a constraint is part of the job.
No unsolicited teardown
Do not redesign their product in the letter. You do not know their constraints.
An example paragraph
This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.
You want a designer for the refund task. I mapped that task from support notes and two sessions, and handed engineering the shorter flow plus the empty and error states.
What to skip
Skip a tool list, a manifesto about empathy, and any participant story that could identify a person. Skip work you cannot show.
Questions
- Should I complete their design exercise early?
- Do the exercise they ask for, on their timeline. An unsolicited one usually misses the brief.
- What if my background is graphic design?
- Say which product workflows you have and have not owned. Interface craft and workflow research are not the same sentence.
