ApplyASAP

How many years of experience should you claim?

Years of experience with a tool or a kind of work is a count. The employer is asking whether you have done the thing long enough that they will not teach it from the start. The count is useful only if you would give the same count out loud.

What the employer is checking

They are checking depth against the posting. Some forms set a minimum and filter on it. They also check that the number agrees with the jobs on your resume. A large number beside a short timeline is obvious. So is a number that counts every year since a classroom first named the tool.

How to answer honestly

Count the time you used that skill in real work, including a substantial project you could discuss. Do not count a course, a tour, or years in a nearby job where someone else used the tool. If your use was occasional, say occasional rather than adding those years as full time. If you are unsure, describe the jobs instead of forcing a precision the form does not truly need.

A short example

These are shapes, not answers from a real applicant. Use the stronger one only where every detail is true for you.

Good. I count the roles where I used the tool myself, and not the years before that when I only received reports from it. I would not add a class I took before I was hired.

Bad. I am counting every year since I first heard the name of the tool, including school and a job where a teammate was the person who used it, because the posting asks for a long stretch.

Pitfalls

  • Rounding up to the minimum written on the posting.
  • Counting overlapping jobs twice so the years exceed the time you have been working.
  • Including a tool you could not use today without relearning it from the start.

How ApplyASAP answers it

ApplyASAP does not invent years to clear a minimum. It counts from the work on your resume. If a skill is not there, it does not add years of it. A skill your role usually involves is not the same thing as years you never stated.

ApplyASAP drafts answers from your real resume and never invents experience. It does not change your employers, dates, degrees, or titles, and it does not invent a number, a certification, or a person you managed.

Questions

What if I used it on one project only?
Say that, if the form allows words. If it forces a count, count the time you used it, not the length of the whole job.
Should an internship count?
Count it when you did the skill and you can discuss the work. Do not count an internship where you only watched.
