How to target jobs in New York

New York

New York postings often share a city name and little else. A bank on the trading side, a hospital system, a newsroom, a fashion office, a law firm, and a hotel can all say New York and want completely different proof. Target the industry and the workplace, not the skyline.

This page does not estimate salaries or how many jobs are open. Those figures go stale, and there is no source for them here.

Finance and professional services

Banks, funds, exchanges, insurers, and the law and accounting firms that serve them are a lasting part of the city's hiring. Postings get specific fast: a product, a coverage group, a regulatory area. Mirror that specificity only where your resume already supports it.

Media, fashion, and advertising

Publishers, studios, agencies, and fashion houses hire marketers, designers, producers, and operators. The portfolio or the list of work you shipped matters more than a generic "New York experience" line.

Healthcare and the public sector

Hospital systems, clinics, universities, and city agencies hire nurses, analysts, administrators, and technologists. Many of these employers use their own application portals and ask for a license or a civil-service title. Use their title if it is one you can honestly hold.

The kinds of employers

Expect large headquarters, unionized hospitals, agencies that staff other firms, and a thick layer of smaller companies that never make a national headline. A posting from a staffing firm should name the work and the location even when it hides the client. If it does not, you cannot tell whether the commute or the license fits.

How to aim an application

Say which part of the city you can reach, or that you need a remote arrangement, in the notes you give anyone applying for you. "New York" on a resume does not tell a Brooklyn hospital and a midtown trading desk the same thing. Use the job title the posting uses when it matches work you have done, including titles that sound institutional rather than startup-flavored.

What to have ready

Have the license, clearance, or portfolio the posting names before you apply. For client-facing roles, a short list of the industries you have already supported is more useful than a slogan about hustle. Keep the resume in a form their portal can read as text.

Questions

Is every New York job in Manhattan?
No. Hospitals, warehouses, campuses, and studios are spread through the boroughs and nearby cities. Read the work site, not just the mailing address of the headquarters.
Should I mention that I will move?
Only if you will. A posting that wants someone on site is a poor match for a plan that says you are staying somewhere else.
