Project manager cover letter
Project letters go wrong when they list soft skills and never say what was delivered. Open with the kind of project in the posting and the closest plan or checklist you have already run.
Resume tips for a project manager
How to open
Name the domain in the first sentence. Say what you tracked. If their work is a kind of project you have not run, say what is adjacent rather than relabeling your old work.
One delivery
Describe one launch, migration, build, or rollout. Include who made the technical or clinical decisions if that was not you.
How you handled a slip
A single sentence on a date that moved, and what you told the stakeholders, is more credible than a claim that everything finished early.
No borrowed headcount
Do not inflate the team. Name the functions you coordinated.
An example paragraph
This is an example to adapt, not a letter from a real applicant. Use it only where every detail is true for you.
You are hiring for a site launch with several specialist teams. I kept the checklist for a retail release, including the content freeze and the defect list the engineering lead controlled.
What to skip
Skip a lecture on methodology, a promise that you will deliver their project on time, and any budget figure you did not own.
Questions
- Should I name the methodology they use?
- Use it if you have worked that way. If you have not, describe how you tracked the work and let them decide if it is close.
- What if the posting is vague?
- Answer the domain words that are there, and do not invent a scope they did not write.
